It looks like Barcelona still haven’t forgiven Luis Figo for doing the unthinkable of moving to their fierce rivals Real Madrid in the year 2000. The Barcelona fans had greeted Figo with the severed head of a pig when he returned to Camp Nou as a Real Madrid player.
The infamous switch happened 15 years ago, but the damaged relationship between the club and Figo has turned sour again after the Catalan club blocked the 42-year-old from playing in the Barcelona and Juventus combined team against a World XI.
UEFA had selected the Portuguese to represent Barcelona for the combined XI before Barca intervened and requested the European governing body to remove him from their team.
Figo spent five years with Barcelona before the controversial move to Real Madrid which shook the footballing world. The latest development suggests that there is no place for Figo in Barcelona's history.
The exhibition match will take place 24 hours prior to the final between Barcelona and Juventus in Berlin. Some of the notable names who are set to feature in the match are Alessandro Del Piero, Edwin van der Sar and Fabio Cannavaro among others.
The Barcelona-Juventus combined XI is going to be managed by Brazilian legend Zico while the World XI legends will be managed by Peter Schmeichel and Ruud Gullit.
Happier days
Figo arrived at Barcelona from Sporting in 1995, and won two La Liga titles for the Catalans. After five years, the Portuguese winger did the unimaginable by crossing over to Real Madrid for a fee of £37m as one of the 'Galactico'.
Figo's return to his home of five years was a bitter one as he was welcomed with banners taunting him. Many objects were also thrown at him which included the pig's head as fans vented their fury at the winger.
That incident summed up the relationship the two parties have shared since then. Figo is more fondly remembered at Real Madrid after he helped them win the La Liga title in 2001 and also was part of the team that won the Champions League.
