The English frontman, 27, is set for showdown talks with the new Old Trafford boss David Moyes this week. Former manager Alex Ferguson had earlier said Rooney was not for sale after claiming the striker had asked for a transfer.
Top Barca sources told SunSport they are monitoring the situation and if United want to flog him they are ready to pounce.
Earlier it was reported that Real Madrid are in search of a striker with Higuain almost certain to leave the Bernabeu, and would be interested in acquiring the services of Rooney who is a well establish Premier League player.
Chelsea are also interested in Rooney as their top target Edinson Cavani seems set to ditch the Premier League club, preferring a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
It is believed that Rooney is precisely the type of attacker that would fit in the Barca system. Barca follows the tradition of defending right from the front and Rooney is known to work harder than anyone and give his 100 percent in every match.
Barca will most likely let go of David Villa with Tottenham in hot pursuit after Arsenal’s interest waned when they seemed favourites to land him in January. They see £250,000-a- week Rooney as the ideal successor to Villa.
It will be very interesting to see where Rooney will land up come this August.
