Barcelona begin their defence of the La Liga title in a home clash against Real Betis on 21 August 2016 after playing two legs of the Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla on August 14 and 17. Jose Enrique’s men had a fairly successful season, winning the Primera Division and Copa Del Rey, with forward Luis Suarez in devastating form for the Blaugrana.
The Catalonian club will look to win their third La Liga crown in a row as they also try to improve on their disappointing Champions League show last season. On the other hand, Barcelona sealed the 2015-16 La Liga with an outstanding 3-0 win over Granada, completing their sixth win in eight years.
Luis Suarez broke Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s duopoly in recent years by winning the Pichichi crown, scoring 40 goals in the process.
Luis Enrique has already roped in French defenders Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne from Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain respectively and will hope that the young guns deliver in their debut campaign to help defend the title from the likes of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in El Clasico on 4 December 2016 at Camp Nou with the reverse fixture taking place in Madrid on 23 April 2017. Real Madrid won the last El Clasico in April in La Liga at Camp Nou, winning the fixture 2-1. However, they were humiliated 4-0 at home by Barcelona in November last year, with Suarez scoring a double.
Another fixture to look forward to for Barcelona fans will be their match against Atletico Madrid on 21 September 2016 at Camp Nou. They will be playing them again on 26 February 2017 at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid.
The Blaugrana were dumped out of the Champions League last season by Atletico Madrid who won 3-2 on aggregate, denying the Spanish champions an opportunity to defend their crown. It will be redemption for Luis Enrique if he can register convincing wins in the La Liga against Los Rojiblancos.
Barcelona will face Eibar in their last match of the campaign on 21 May 2017, where the defending champions will be hoping to beat rivals Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to lift the La Liga crown yet again.
