Dani Alves has achieved a lot of success with Barcelona over the years. He’s probably won more trophies than most players have in a lifetime. Alves has consistently performed well for the Catalan club and has also been included in the FIFA XI five times.
So in an exclusive interview with The Guardian, he was asked how difficult it is to perform consistently at the highest level in club competitions and at the same time achieving so much success. To this he replied, “Maybe it’s easy to win a title at Barcelona, maybe it is, What’s not is to win so much, to have a long history here.”
Now over the years Alves has filled his trophy cabinet to the point of overcapacity but when he was asked which of those trophies was the most meaningful he said,”If I had to choose [which medals mean most], I’d say last year’s because there were so many doubts: if I was finished, if Barcelona should get rid of me, if I shouldn’t be there ...”
Alves has not always been a regular starter these days for Barcelona with the arrival of Aleix Vidal at the club. The Barcelona youth product left the academy as a teenager and really came into his own at Sevilla last season. Dani Alves’ former club and was bought back by his old club in the summer of 2015.
But due to the ban imposed on the club he has only started playing recently along with fellow teammate Arda Turan. But he seems to have adapted well to the Barca system and is providing tough competition for the veteran right back.
Alves on his uncertain future last year
There was considerable doubt over Alves’ future last year after he had a drop in form and his contract was up. Many accused him of being selfish and not caring about the club but some of his teammates backed him up including one Lionel Messi. The Argentine was quoted as saying, “It would be difficult to find another like him”
So when Alves was asked about that situation and whether it bothered him he said, “I wouldn’t say it got to me but it annoyed me because I love my profession, I live for football, for my team, my team-mates. If I only thought about myself, I’d be no use. I don’t want to talk about me, me, me ... and find we haven’t won anything. That’s a disaster”
