Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes feels that the quality in English football has declined to such a level that teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich would win the league by a margin of 10 to 15 points if they were to play in the Premier League.
Scholes’ criticism came after Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester City exited from the Champions League round of 16, and Dynamo Kiev made short work of Everton in the Europa League. The losses saw all the remaining English teams exit Europe.
“Even PSG and Juventus are better than the best EPL team”
Scholes who has lifted the European trophy twice in his career, has given his view on the performances of English teams in the European competition.
In the Independent, Scholes wrote, “Over the last two weeks our coaches and players in the Champions League have looked second rate. If you put one of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the Premier League, they would win it by 10 to 15 points.
“Even PSG and Juventus look better sides than any of those currently at the top of the Premier League.”
While some argue that the absence of a winter break in the Premier League leaves the English teams worn out, Scholes blames it on the quality of the players.
“The bottom line to this season's failings? I think the big two in Spain, and Bayern, simply have better players than the English teams in the Champions League,” he wrote.
