Manchester United and Liverpool are set to do battle this summer over the signature of Alexandre Song after the Cameroonian was made available for transfer by Barcelona, according to the Mirror.
Song has struggled to make a significant impact at Camp Nou as he has generally been used as a squad player since his move from Arsenal two years ago and Barcelona are now keen to move him on in order to make room for new signings in their proposed summer shake-up.
Defenders are a priority for the Catalan club, with the likes of Daniel Agger linked with a move to Barcelona and the the availability of Song has alerted the attentions of the Premier League pair.
Song has always indicated that a return to England would be his preference if he ever were to leave Barcelona and both United and Liverpool are keen to grant him that wish as the Catalans look to clear space for new acquisitions.
Both sides have made a defensive midfielder one of their priorities for the summer as they look to improve their own miserable defensive records, and Song’s Premier League experience makes him an appealing target for the pair.
Barcelona paid £16million to land Song two years ago, but it is believed that he will cost half of that now, and both clubs are thought to be happy to part with £8m to bring him back to the Premier League.
