Barcelona’s new signing Luis Suarez has promised fans that he will never bite again.
The Uruguay striker was initially banned for four months, nine international matches and any football activity after biting Giorgio Chiellini in a match against Italy at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This was the third time he was involved in biting an opponent.
But he has revealed that he will not repeat the mistake again and wants to focus on his career at the Catalan club.
Luis Suarez to fans: Don’t worry
Suarez said he is working with specialists to curb such unacceptable behaviour.
He said: “I say to fans, don't worry, because I won't do that anymore,
“I spoke to my psychologist and he said I had to face it and say sorry. I did - now I would rather focus on the present, which is Barcelona.
“I am speaking to professionals - the right professionals. But it is a private matter and I don't want to comment further on that.”
The 27-year-old said he was “really depressed” after the World Cup. He had appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the four month ban from any footballing activities. Although the CAS upheld the ban which doesn’t allow him to play in competitive matches, he is still allowed to play in friendly matches. He will not be allowed to play for Uruguay either for a further eight matches.
Suarez was concerned about his career
The Uruguay international revealed that he was scared for his career following the biting incident.
“Of course I was concerned - not just about the transfer to Barcelona but more for me as a person.
“But, as I've said, that's in the past now and I'm trying to concentrate on Barcelona,” he added.
“Everything that happens in the past, that needs to be forgotten. If I start thinking about everything I've gone through, I wouldn't be able to sleep.”
