#2 Controlling the midfield
Right from kick-off, the midfield duo of Thiago Alcantara and Corentin Tolisso dictated the game for the Bavarians. Bayern Munich took control of the game early on and never let go of the reins. As a result, even though Red Star did come knocking at the Bayern door on quite a few occasions, the visitors failed to gather their footing and their midfielders had a hard time all night.
Thiago was the main architect of Bayern’s dominance in the middle. The Spaniard kept the ball moving around the park, set up his forwards with acute passes and dictated the tempo of the game. Red Star had no answer to Alcantara’s skill set and failed to get close to him. The Spaniard, in turn, used his guile and poise to win the midfield battle, which helped Bayern win the game. He switched the play with ease, brought the fullbacks into the game and helped ease the pressure off the backline.
At the end of the game, Bayern Munich had attempted 785 passes with 89% accuracy. The Bundesliga side’s ability to control the midfield ultimately helped them win the game
