Bayern Munich 3-2 Barcelona: Five Talking Points

Defences go missing

A game between the Champions League's top scorers and a side featuring a front three that have scored over 100 goals already this season was never going to be a low-scoring affair. And while the attacking intent and quality of both sides going forward must surely be marvelled at, the defending from both sides left a lot to be desired.

While Roy Keane can be controversial at the best of times, his comments at half-time on ITV that the defending was "like kids playing on the street" was certainly true. Despite their 3-0 deficit, had Bayern managed to actually turn up as a defensive unit, they would have had a chance of going through, even against this Barcelona side.

The visitors too, weren't without blame and their inability to defend set-pieces was evident once again. For a game of such high quality attacking football, some of the defending was comical at best, pathetic at worst and you can't help but feel that a side that can actually defend well, might stand a chance against the Catalans in the final.

Barcelona aren't without their faults

MSN might have just eclipsed BBC as the best trio in the world. There is little doubt that the Catalans, with Messi, Suarez and Neymar are a goal threat at all times, but this side, much like the all-conquering Pep side before it, isn't without its faults. Despite boasting of the best forwards money can buy, the Catalans still don't have something even remotely resembling a solid defence.

While they get away with it on every occasion thanks to the threat they pose going forward and their ability to retain possession, if a side is capable of denying them the space and can effectively make use of set-pieces, as Bayern did for a specific duration, this side can be got at.

Enrique's side aren't going to win too many balls in the air and if you can make use of this from corners and free kicks, then you can certainly score against them. But as Bayern found out, scoring is the easy part, shutting down their attacking trio, who have now scored 114 goals this season, is the difficult bit that not many can manage.
