FC Bayern Munich have achieved their first-ever historic treble with a 3-2 cup victory against VfB Stuttgart at the Berlin Olympic Stadium tonight. Not all went according to plan for the Bavarians, who, like in the Champions League final last week, needed time to settle down, while Stuttgart were aggressive from the start and also had the better chances in the initial phase of the match. Maxim’s shot just missed the far post before Neuer was forced to make a double save. But thereafter, Bayern Munich took control of proceedings and Stuttgart were lucky not to concede a penalty as captain Serdar Tasci came late and hit Arjen Robben in the 31st minute, but referee Manuel Gräfe didn’t point to the spot. However, he did do so five minutes later as Traoré brought down an attacking Philipp Lahm. It was Thomas Müller who coolly slotted the spot-kick home to make 1-0 for Bayern Munich, and it stayed so until the break.Only three minutes into the second half, FC Bayern made it 2-0 after a good build-up on the right through a Mario Gomez goal, who had missed a chance just before the break. And Stuttgart seemed finally beaten as Gomez scored his second of the night in the 61st minute off Thomas Müller’s pass.
FC Bayern now slowed down with the conviction that they had won the German Cup and achieved their treble, but Stuttgart would use this relaxed attitude to their advantage even though they themselves initially didn’t believe that they had any chance. First Martin Harnik headed in a Sakai cross in the 71st minute before Okazaki missed a good chance, but when Harnik scored his second of the night on 80 minutes, the Bavarians has a tense last ten minutes.
In the end, Stuttgart didn’t get a real chance to equalise, while Bayern Munich just wanted to finish off the match. When it ended, it was celebration time for Munich, as the 3-2 scoreline meant they had achieved their first-ever treble.
