The all-German Champions League Final at Wembley was supposed to be a magical night with exciting football on display. And the 22 men on the field did not disappoint as a controlled Bayern Munich side ran out 2-1 winners against an aggressive Dortmund side that never looked like giving in.
The first half ended all square, with neither team able to open their accounts. Mario Mandzukic scored on the hour mark, courtesy a Robben assist, to hand Bayern the lead, a lead that they would have been wary off, considering last year’s final. But Dante’s high-foot challenge on Marko Reus, although did not earn him marching orders from the referee, was deemed dangerous enough to warrant a penalty. Gundogan equalised from the spot in the 68th minute, which set up a nervy finish to the game.
With both teams looking towards extra time, it was Robben, in the 89th, who latched onto a loose ball in the penalty box to roll it past Weidenfeller, who had a spectacular match but could do nothing about this one. The last minutes saw a flurry of substitutions from either side, but Bayern held on for the 3 minutes of extra time to collect their 5th Champions League trophy.
Final Score: Borussia Dortmund (Gundogan 68′) 1 – 2 Bayern Munich (Mandzukic 60′, Robben 89′)
