Uli Hoeness, President of the European champions Bayern Munich, has been charged by prosecutors in Germany for tax evasion.
The prosecutors though, have not given the details of the indictment, citing tax secrecy laws. The charge comes after the prosecutors conducted a lengthy inquiry. Hoeness has one month to respond to the charges before a Munich court.
“We have filed the charges to the Munich state court. The defence now has one month to pronounce itself,” a spokesman for the Munich prosecutors said.
The BBC reports that Hoeness had deposited millions of euros in a Zurich based account for over 10 years. Earlier this year, he reported himself to the authorities over an undeclared Swiss Bank account. He is also reported to have failed to pay capital gains tax.
The news of the former West Germany international’s secret bank account caused public outrage with even Chancellor Angela Merkel said to have expressed her disappointment with the Bayern president.
