Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dropped a huge hint that forward Mario Mandzukic could be allowed to leave the German champions in the summer.
Speaking to FAZ Rummenigge said “If Mario stays here, it won’t be easy for him, because a world-class player is coming to us. The question is whether he wants to face up to this competition or would prefer to go to another club.”
Mandzukic, 27, has emerged as a target for a host of Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United. He has been left out of the Bavarian’s squad for the DFB Pokal final against Borussia Dortmund on disciplinary grounds and could be set for a move away.
Bayern Munich have agreed to sign Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who beat Mandzukic to the German golden boot award, from rivals Borussia Dortmund.
Jurgen Klopp and his club and criticised Bayern for the way in which they have signed two of Dortmnd’s star players and Rummenige admitted that things could have been done differently but still maintained he wasn’t a fan of Dortmund’s approach.
“When I have personally been critical of Borussia Dortmund, it’s only because I did not like it when they tried to present us as a Goliath, who runs the Bundesliga like a robber baron.”
“On the other hand, I should have had a bit more restraint.”
