Bayern Munich have won the Laureus World Team of the Year 2014 award. Bayern had a phenomenal last year under former coach Jupp Heynckes and became the first team in German football history to complete the treble of UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

Last night, Bayern demonstrated their dominance in the 3-1 victory over Hertha BSC as they won the Bundesliga with seven matches remaining in the season. It is the earliest the championship has been won in Bundesliga history, breaking the record Bayern had set in the previous season.

A club football team has only won this award on two previous occasions, Manchester United in 2000 and FC Barcelona in 2012.

The Laureus World Sports Awards are widely considered to be the Oscars of sports, and are held annually to honour remarkable individual and team achievements throughout the year.

There are seven nominations under Laureus, six of which are: Laureus World Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback and Action Sports Awards. The nominees are decided by the votes of Laureus Media Selection Panel, which consists of leading sports editors, writers, broadcasters and online journalists from around the world.

The Laureus World Sportsperson with a Disability Award, is chosen by a specialist panel.

The voting for the winners in all the seven categories is carried out, where members of the Laureus World Sports Academy cast their vote by secret ballot.
