Liverpool FC’s campaign to bring justice to the 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster has got yet another international recognition as the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, has decided to honour one of the frontrunners of the campaign, Anne Williams, who passed way in April, 2013, with the Helen Rollason award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony today.
The Helen Rollason Award, which is presented to an individual for showing ‘outstanding achievement in the face of adversity’, will be accepted by Anne’s daughter Sara, son Michael, and brother Danny, at an event in Leeds later today (December 15).
The award is presented in remembrance of a former BBC presenter who died in 1999 after suffering from cancer and acknowledges ‘outstanding achievement in the face of adversity.’
Anne will receive the award for her tireless campaign for a new inquest for her son Kevin, who was one of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster on April 15, 1989.
“My mum embodied the very reason this award was created; strength, determination and passion. Her tireless campaigning was driven by the love she had for Kevin and her dedication to seeking a new inquest. If anyone triumphed over adversity, it’s my mum,” said Sara who is now a part of the Hillsborough campaign.
Jenny Pitman, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Jane Tomlinson, Ellen MacArthur, Frank Williams, and Paul Hunter (posthumous) are few of the eminent personalities to have received the award in the years gone by.
