Belgium manager Marc Wilmots has singled out few individuals from his side for their poor performance after Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Cyprus in Euro 2016 qualifier. Marc Wilmots has branded the Chelsea forward “the worst player on the night” despite his match-winning goal in the Mediterranean, according to Express.
Chelsea star man Hazard left it late to make his mark on the game – grabbing a late winner for Belgium as they registered a win in their Euro 2016 qualifier on a tense night. He has now scored two goals in two matches for the Belgium side, but his club form has been below par this season and is yet to register a goal for Chelsea. Eden Hazard's crucial goal to Belgium's qualification for Euro 2016 was not enough to spare him the fury of his manager Wilmots.
The 24-year-old was crowned PFA Players' Player Of The Year award last season for his tremendous contribution to Chelsea's Premier League title. Hazard however, has had a poor start by failing to score in his side's first four matches and is yet to emulate last season's fine form.
Marc Wilmots hit out at the 24-year-old for his overall performance in Cyprus.
"He (Hazard) was the worst tonight," Wilmots said.
"I thought about substituting him, but in the last 10 minutes he always has the ability to do that. At the World Cup, this was the case.
"I obviously expect more from him, but he will grow as the season progresses."
Belgium are now behind Group B leaders Wales by a point with just two games remaining of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. On the other hand Hazard will be looking to rediscover his last season’s form as the midfielder hasn’t scored for Chelsea since May and has averaged just one shot per game in the Premier League this season.
Benteke subbed at half-time
Liverpool striker Benteke has also been highly criticized by his national coach for his poor performance along with Eden Hazard. Liverpool signed Christian Benteke from Aston Villa this summer for £32 million. Marc Wilmots was disappointed with the striker as he had put in a 'half-performance' on the night and was taken off at half-time.
“We won two games in a row but this is the worst team performance I have seen and we will try to rectify the issue," Wilmots said.
"But we believed until the end that we would score and managed to got the result we needed."
