Besiktas to play four closed door home matches

Ankara, Sep 27 (IANS): Turkey’s Besiktas was ordered by the Professional Football Disciplinary Committee (PFDK) to play four home matches behind closed doors after its fans invaded and occupied the pitch in injury time in a match against Galatasaray.

The anticipated decision came Thursday after an hour-long meeting of the PFDK which reviewed options to deliver a ban on the ‘Black Eagles’ in order to deter similar acts in the future, reports Xinhua.

Referee Firat Aydinus postponed the Turkish Super Lig derby between Besiktas and Galatasaray Sunday after Besiktas fans stormed the pitch, throwing chairs at Galatasaray midfielder Felipo Melo and clashing with police. Galatasaray led the match 2-1 and the game was abandoned due to the invasion.

“We are very saddened to see the match end this way and these ugly pictures aired not only in Turkey but also in Europe and on international TV channels,” said Galatasaray deputy chairman Ozkan Olcay.
