The end of the year 2009 is upon us. This has been a very eventful year for the Premier League. Transfer window is going to open again and fans are eagerly waiting for it as the last window was very eventful with lots of deals being made. Madrid and City being the two main reasons for the same. So lets look back at some of the best and worst signings of the last window in the Premier League.
Best-
Dunne,Collins and Warnock - Well with Man City going berserk, no one paid any attention to these three players whom Martin O’Neil acquired with little outlay of not more than 20 millions in total. But they have been the reason for Aston Villas wonderful defensive record. After the retirement of Martin Laursen, they had struggled in the last half of the last season. But these three have shored up their defense and this season they have the best defensive record in Premier League after Chelsea. Dunne has been absolutely awesome. They have been the reason why Villa have successfully defeated Man United and Liverpool. It makes me wonder, why did City let Dunne go so easily.
Vermaelan- This is another master class from Wenger. Everyone thought the transfer of Toure was not warranted. But Wenger let him go and bought an even better replacement. Not only has be been solid at the back, but he is also very good with the ball. He even has scored 4 goals and has 1 assist in the Premier League. Everyone who earlier had doubts about his lack of height were made to eat their words by his solid and commanding performances.
Duff- We had almost forgotten about him after he had been transferred to Newcastle. All his exploits on the wings for Chelsea were forgotten after his spell at Newcastle. It was mostly marred by injuries and shambolic management at Newcastle. But he has been revived after his transfer to Fulham. Coming for a undisclosed fee, he surely was a very screwed buy. He has added more potency to the Fulham attack scoring 4 goals in the process. He along with Boby Zamora have been mainly behind Fulham’s better scoring rate than last season.
Cana- To be given the captaincy of the team after only one and a half months speaks volume of how highly he is rated. Playing as a central defensive midfielder, he has given plenty of strong preformances which have made him a fan favorite in his short stay. Although Sunderland‘s form has dropped of late, but still Cana deserves his place in this list. What makes him a good signing is that he come for only 5 Million Pounds. Even Fergusson has praised Steve Bruce for his signing of Cana. Aged only 26, we will surely see a lot of him in the future.
Worst
Aquilani- He has been disappointing. Injuries have plagued him, but inspite of his return to fitness, he still has not been able to cement a place in the team. Brought to replace Alonso, he has failed to live up to the expectation. But adjusting to the Premier League take times. Also he has been injured for quite a long time. So he may shine in the future. But for now he deserves his place in the Worst Signings List.
This brings me to the end of this article. Wishing you all a very Happy and Prosperous New Year.
