A solid FIFA 14 defensive formation in Fifa is not the one that plays 6 defenders at the back and 5 in midfield.
It’s all about your style of play.
For example, you’ve somehow come away with a 1-1 draw in one of the Champions league knockout games at the Bernabeu or at Old Trafford, and you’re playing with a small club like PSV or AS Roma and you’re desperate not to concede at home and go through on away goals or you just like scoring a goal and then parking the bus, or if you just can’t score but don’t want to concede, then you’ve come to the right place.
Certain Fifa players like passing the ball around in their own half and looking for the occasional counter attack. Some play with a high line while some are very confident in tackling and putting blocks in.
The ideal formation for most players is a customized 4-3-3 holding, with your wingers downing defensive work and being good at playing crosses.
Goalkeeper
The ideal goal keeper for this is someone who is good with his clearances and is a solid shot stopper.
Ideally, Manuel Neuer would be perfect, but since you’re playing at a small club, someone like Keylor Navas or Salvatore Sirigu would fit the bill.
Defence
In the defence, you’ll need solid centre halves and defensive full backs. You don’t want someone like a Rafael or Jordi Alba, as they tend to move forward and get caught out of position a lot more than anyone else. Rather it would be safe to go with experience. Someone like an Arbeloa at RB and Nacho Monreal at LB are two solid players. Cesar Azpilecuta is also another decent choice at Right back. For centre halves, you’ll need two very tall and strong ones who are capable of dealing with corners. Someone like a Nemanja Vidic who is old and very cheap for his skill set is an ideal buy, he can be partnered in defense with a young player who can be loaned out, like Nathan Ake at Chelsea or Marc Bartra at Barca.
Midfield
You need three solid central midfielders. Paul Pogba in the first season is available for around 15 million and you can make a hefty profit on him in a few years, but for the time being he is a solid player who has a very good positioning skill. The other two central midfielders can be young as long as they’re strong or have a good passing game or are good long range shooters. Ruben Pardo of Real Sociedad can be bought for 7-8 million and someone like Casemiro can be loaned out from Real or you can buy Fernando from Porto, another cheap centre half.
Forwards
You’ll need two well-equipped wingers who are very good crossers as your team will play on the counter attack and they must be pacy. In addition to this, they must be solid in defence. Antonio Valencia is a very good choice for this purpose, as he fits the criteria perfectly. His partner on the left wing will have to be someone prolific, because you have to get the goals from somewhere! Someone who is good with long range shots and plays good through balls is an ideal choice. Someone like a Memphis Depay or Zakaria Bakkali are good choices, both are young and will make brilliant wingers in the future.
As far as your striker is concerned, you’ll need a solid target man and someone who is strong. You can pick Romelu Lukaku on loan in the first season and you can try to buy someone like Drogba, Locadia or Remy. If you prefer playing the ball on the ground then Edin Dzeko or Javier Hernandez are good choices.
Now, if you’re wondering where you’re going to get all these funds from, not to fear; you can always sell of the players in your team who don’t fit the criteria in their positions. If you have someone like James Ward Prowse you don’t need to sell him as he is a good central mid who will show good growth and fits your teams style of play. You can also pick up several talents on loan from the big teams. The players I’ve suggested are all top of the line, you could go in for someone cheaper
So, go on and build a solid team. If you have doubts with a players skill set, you can always go to ‘futhead’ a site that gives you a player’s particular statistics and so on.
