Sepp Blatter says he did not resign from post of FIFA president

Blatter: “I did not resign.”

Sepp Blatter was thought to have stepped down from his post, but according to a Swiss newspaper Blick, Blatter told a party at a Fifa museum: “I did not resign. I put myself and my office in the hands of the Fifa Congress.”

In the same week Blatter was being re-elected for his fifth term, two investigations into alleged FIFA corruption had begun. Four days after being voted in as FIFA President, he had this to say: “While I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football. Therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as FIFA president until that election."

There was no usage of the words ‘resign’ or ‘resignation’ in Blatter’s statement, which means that he will probably continue being the interim President of FIFA, till the elections which are expected to be in mid-December.

A source close to Blatter said that ‘everything is possible’, and that he might be considering an audacious bid for re-election as FIFA President, if no suitable alternative candidate arises.

Sepp Blatter is currently embroiled in twin investigations into FIFA by American and Swiss authorities, which may seem him miss out on the Women’s World Cup final in Canada.
