Brazilian legend Pele has issued his backing to England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, insisting the striker deserves to be the first name on the team-sheet.Rooney has come under scrutiny for his role in the England team recently, with many believing he should not be a guaranteed starter, especially after his subdued performance against Italy in England’s World Cup opener.
The Manchester United striker has failed to recreate his club form on the international stage for England in recent years and the Three Lions supporters have taken notice of the situation. Despite assisting Sturridge for England’s goal in Manaus, Rooney has been lambasted by many.
He is set to be handed a role in his favoured central position against Uruguay, despite Raheem Sterling’s strong performance in that area against the Italians.
Pele believes it is the right decision and insists Rooney is still a key figure in the England side.
Pele told Sky Sports News: “I have followed him for a long time and I like the way he plays.
“If I was a coach, he would be one of the players in my team, no doubt, because he plays with heart and spirit, but it is the same situation as we see in Brazil.
“You cannot put responsibility on one player in the World Cup. Brazil have put too much responsibility on Neymar in his first World Cup. I like Rooney.”Rooney won just 25% of his duels against Italy in the opening game.
