Brazil meet Costa Rica in their Copa America campaign opener

Brazil will get their Copa America 2024 campaign underway at SoFi Stadium against Costa Rica on Monday. Brazil finished as the runners-up in the previous edition and will look to go all the way this time around.

Costa Rica have been invited to the competition for the first time since 2016 when they were eliminated from the group stage.

Seleção have played four friendlies in 2024 and are unbeaten in these games with two wins and two stalemates. They registered a 3-2 win over Mexico in a friendly earlier this month and in their previous outing, they were held to a 1-1 draw by the USA, with Rodrygo scoring in the first half, thanks to Raphinha's assist.

Los Ticos played in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, recording 4-0 and 3-0 wins over Costa Rica and Grenada respectively. They have been eliminated from the group stage in three of their five appearances in the competition.

They have met just once in the Copa America, with that meeting coming in the group stage of the 1997 edition. Brazil came out on top on that occasion, recording a commanding 5-0 win.

Brazil vs Costa Rica: Numbers you need to know before their Copa America 2024 encounter

Seleção have progressed to the knockout stage of the Copa America in all but two of their appearances in the competition. After facing an early exit in the 2016 edition, they went on to lift their ninth title in 2019.

They made it to the final for the second consecutive time in 2021 but lost to Lionel Messi's Argentina. They have kept nine clean sheets in their last 13 games in the Copa America, suffering just one loss in that period.

Los Ticos have kept clean sheets in their last three games and will look to build on that form. In their last match in the Copa America in the 2016 group stage, they registered a 3-2 win over Colombia. Interestingly, they have failed to score in their last three meetings against the 2019 Copa America winners.

Both teams will look to get their campaign off to a winning start but Seleção are the better side on paper and strong favorites to register a win.
