Brazilian playmaker Diego, has always been one of the hottest properties in Europe. His ability to dribble with the ball, his Messi-like way he could find a pass from what seems like a dead situation and his untiring way he could create endless amounts of chances for his attackers.
All of these attributes made Diego one of the most feared players in Europe, around four years ago. Ever since the 28-year-old returned to the Bundesliga after a season with Italian side, Juventus, talk about him being the magician he is, had died down. His season at Juventus was one filled with disappointment - the formation Juve used did not suit him and he had a fall-out with then coach Ciro Ferrara. Juventus announced Diego would leave the Bianconeri despite the Brazilian pleading to stay at the club.
However, Diego has turned himself around as a player and although he’s 28-years-old, it hasn’t stopped some of the world’s biggest clubs enquiring about his services. A whole host of clubs, including: Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United, Monaco and Liverpool have all shown minor interest in the former-Werder Bremen man who is out of contract at the end of the season. According to Sky SportsDiego, firstly wants to listen to what his current club, Wolfsburg have to offer him, in terms of a new contract.
So, if Liverpool were to make an offer for the Brazilian, what would The Reds be purchasing in terms of his performance, based on this season?
According to German newspaper Bild, Diego has been one of the Bundesliga’s players of the season so far, this is some effort considering some of the players that ply their trade in Germany’s top division.
Here at Squawka, we agree with Bild – even in a team like Wolfsburg, who’s current form is, to put it nicely, erratic. They’ve won six and lost five so far this season. But Diego has looked a different class. This is perfectly shown through the amount of chances he’s created so far this campaign (26).
Even from the start of the season there have been questions asked about Diego’s future, however, he has played every minute of Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga campaign to-date. This tells you that the northern Germany side want to keep him around and make sure that he signs a new contract that ties him to the club.
Furthermore, Diego has always been known for his passing ability and the way he can pick passes from what seem like impossible situations, this season has been no different to this. Diego’s passing accuracy stands at 82%, this is once again among the best in the Bundesliga.
Another impressive stat is Diego’s tackle success. The Brazilian playmaker has won 90% of his tackles, showing he has the ability to retrieve the ball too. Also, the Wolfsburg midfielder’s take-on success rate stands at 82% and shows he’s been successful 62 times out of the 76 times he’s tried to take on his opposition number. This stat amounts to nearly six take ons per game so far this season and his 62 successful take-ons puts him top of the Bundesliga successful take-on list.
Diego would be a great signing for Liverpool, he could fit perfectly into the current formation Brendan Rodgers is playing at Anfield. Perhaps the issue would be whether Wolfsburg would sell Diego, given how crucial he is to their team.
