Breno's absence a loss for Brazil's Olympic football team?

As the Brazilian football team marches on for its quest for Olympic glory in the ongoing London games, the team may just be missing out on a key player, former Bayern Munich star Breno Borges.

Borges, who is currently serving a prison term for suspected arson(setting his own house on fire in a drunken stupor!), was initially a part of Brazil’s current Olympic football team.

But problems, including a knee injury as well as ongoing psychiatric issues, have ensured that Breno, once considered one of Bayern’s brightest prospects, could not live upto his potential, and missed out on the Brazilian Olympic squad.

Borges has been given a 3 year-9 month prison sentence, and this could seriously affect his international football career after his prison term gets over.

Though the current Brazilian U-23 squad has quality players like the prodigal Neymar and Milan star Alexander Pato, the lack of a quality defender was evident during Brazil’s opener against Egypt, when they almost squandered a 3-0 lead by conceding two second half goals, and also fell behind early to Belarus in the next game.

A defender of Borges’ quality would definitely have given Brazil much needed stability at the back.

Though Borges now has to complete the 3 year prison term and also cope with his personal issues, there remains doubts as to whether the former Bayern Munich star can make a quick transition from life in the prison to professional football once his prison term gets over.

And if he does succeed, it may just be the start of a new beginning for the talented Borges.
