Indian origin head coach Robin Dutt was expected to have a tough season at his new club SV Werder Bremen, but after two matches in the 2013/14 Bundesliga season the North Germans are one of five clubs yet to drop a point. Two 1-0 wins against Eintracht Braunschweig away and then FC Augsburg at home have given Bremen six points from two matches, a much better than expected start to their Bundesliga campaign after a dismal pre-season and a shock first round elimination in the German Cup (DFB Pokal).
In both matches, Bremen had their problems and were put under pressure by their opponents, but they survived and scored the all important winner; which they weren’t able to score last season.
Robin Dutt had left his plush technical director job at the German Football Association (DFB) after less than a year to return to a football club as he missed the day to day coaching work, which he didn’t have in his DFB office and strategy work. But there were doubts if Dutt would be able to turn things around with Bremen, who in recent years have been unable to reach European competitions and were rather fighting to stay in the Bundesliga.
It is about rebuilding Werder Bremen as a team with minimal investments and take them back into Europe, but that needs time with Dutt saying before the start of the season that fans shouldn’t expect too much.
But it has only been two matches into the season and Robin Dutt, with his team, will have to prove that the good start wasn’t a fluke. Next-up will be Borussia Dortmund away and at the Signal Iduna Park, things would surely be tougher than the Braunschweig and Augsburg.
