Stuttgart have appointed Thomas Schneider as the club’s new manager following the sacking of Bruno Labbadia on Monday.

Schneider spent 20 years at the club during his playing days and has been working as the coach of the club’s Under-17 team following his retirement.

The 40-year-old German has signed a two-year deal and will be assisted by Alfons Higl and Tomislav Maric.

“We’re convinced that we have made the right decision. Thomas did a great job with the U-17 team, becoming runners-up in 2011/12. He knows the club inside out”, said Fredi Bobic who is the Sporting Director of the club.

Bruno Labbadia was sacked after the club failed to start the season on a good note after losing all three of their opening Bundesliga fixtures.

Schneider said that he was honoured by the appointment and also said that his primary focus will be on the team’s UEFA Europa League qualifier against HNK Rijeka.

“It’s going to be hard work but I’m looking forward to it. There’s a lot of hard work to be done, but we’re all ready for it. At the moment, all our concentration is on the game against Rijeka”, he said.
