Burundi and Malawi lock horns at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in neutral Ivory Coast on Thursday for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This is essentially a dead rubber with both teams officially knocked out of the race to reach the Moroccan showpiece next year.

Ranked 139th in the world, the Swallows are currently in third position in the Group L standings with three points from four games. With Senegal and Burkina Faso both accumulating 10 points each, there's mathematically no chance for Burundi or Malawi to qualify for the competition.

That means their wait for a second appearance at the AFCON finals is set to continue for now. On the other hand, Malawi have fared worse, losing all four of their games to see their qualifying hopes fizzle out with a whimper.

Sitting just five positions above their rivals in the world rankings, the Flames are without a single point in the bag right now, an unwanted distinction currently shared only by Namibia and South Sudan.

This will be just the third encounter between these two sides in history.
They met for the first time in July 1987 for a friendly game which ended in a 1-1 draw. In September this year, the Swallows pulled off a 3-2 win in the first match of the ongoing AFCON qualifying campaign.
Malawi are one of the three teams without a point in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after four games. South Sudan and Namibia are the other sides.
Both these teams have been knocked out of the current race for the 2025 edition of the tournament.
With 11 goals conceded, Malawi have the worst defensive record of any side in the AFCON qualifiers except the Central African Republic, who have leaked 12 goals.

With neither side in the race for qualification, this is a clash where only pride is at stake. Even then, the Flames have been really poor in these qualifiers, losing all four games and conceding a handful of goals.

The Swallows are not a formidable side but they should be able to see off their Malawian rivals here.
