Arsenal are looking at Southampton’s promising young full-back, Calum Chambers, should Bacary Sagna leave the club in the summer, according to the London Evening Standard.
The Gunners and Sagna are at a stalemate over contract negotiations with the Frenchman’s current deal expiring in the summer. He apparently wants a three-year deal but due to Arsenal’s policy of offering contracts to players aged over 30, they are unwilling to offer such terms.
Arsenal have managed to get most of the club’s top starts to sign new contracts this season, with Tomas Rosicky, Per Mertesacker, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla the most recent recipients of new deals.
However, Sagna’s future remains a doubt so it is thought that Arsene Wenger is looking towards Chambers as the answer to his problems. He must fight off interest from Manchester United, though, who are desperate to strengthen their defence over the summer to try and get back into the top four.
Chambers has been impressive this season, appearing 17 times in the Premier League and starting 15 of those. It is thought that it will take either United or Arsenal around £10 million to prise Chambers away from Southampton, who have a raft of English talent bustling at the seams.
The Saints may well lose a host of their first-team stars over the summer as the big clubs are circling.
Chambers has won 63% of his tackles in the league this season: 33/52.
