Liverpool have got off to a dream start this season and after 11 games played are just 2 points behind their North London rivals Arsenal. This start has surprised many pundits as well as the fans that seem to have accepted the life of living in the shadow of their rivals Manchester United who have emulated and also broken the most converted record of winning 19 Premier League titles.
The Reds have never been considered as title contenders in recent years and the closest they came to winning the title was under Rafa Benitez era at Anfield where they finished 2nd in the league. However after Rafa leaving the club the Reds have struggled in Premier League constantly and the aim of the club has been restricted to just finishing above their fierce rivals Everton. However will this season be a similar story or are Brendan Rodgers’s men ready to mount a serious title challenge.
The Reds under Rodgers have been playing free flowing football this season and scoring goals for fun with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge forming a deadly due in front of goal with both attackers tied at 8 goals a piece along with Sergio Aguero as Premier Leagues top scorers.
This is clear indication that the attacking philosophy of the manager seems to be going well received and implemented by the players on the field. The Anfield based club has also been very active in the transfer market in the summer market with Kolo Toure, Simon Mignolet and Victor Moses the most prominent ones to move to Anfield.
This has given the Reds added fire power both on the field as well as the bench. The other advantage which Liverpool enjoy over other title contenders is that they are not involved in any European competitions be in the Champions League or the Europa League thus ensuring that they will be playing just one match per week. This enables the Reds to not only prepare well for their matches but the issue of team fatigue should not also be a problem considering the amount of talent on show.
With all said and done Liverpool still have some glaring weaknesses which have also being bought to the forefront. In games against Arsenal indicating the lack of options of the bench when Suarez and Sturridge fail in front of goal.
Also, Brendan Rodgers’s tendency in tinkering the teams formation especially in defense with strategy of employing 3 at the back and playing wing backs to moving to the strategy of playing a back four these issues need to be sorted out at the earliest.
What’s also worrying is the lack of contribution of Steven Gerrard whose age seems to be catching up with the Reds legend. Lastly, it also remains to be seen whether controversial striker Luis Suarez will remain at the club with rumors afloat that Real Madrid lining up bids for the Uruguay striker.
With all these uncertainty surrounding the club it remains to be seen if the Reds can overcome these obstacles and mount a serious title challenge or will the promising start end in a whimper only time will tell.
