Crystal Palace were the only Premier League team to suffer a shock second round exit in the Capital One Cup, as Liverpool, Hull City, Sunderland and Fulham overcame hiccups.

Norwich City and Southampton hammered their opponents en route to the third round, while West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United also registered easy wins.

Bristol City defeated their much fancied opponents Crystal Palace at Ashton gate courtesy second-half goals from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Scott Wagstaff.

Sunderland were on the brink of a ‘(c)upset’ as they were trailing MK Dons 2-0 with just 12 minutes to go, but a Connor Wickham’s two goals helped them recover to a 4-2 win.

Notts County displayed loads of character when they recovered from two goals down to force extra-time at Anfield, before goals from Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson sealed a 4-2 win for Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Hull City needed extra-time to clear the passage into the third round as Robbie Brady’s 107th minute goal defeated Leyton Orient much to the disappointment at Brisbane Road.

Hugo Rodallega levelled for Fulham in the 117th before John Arne Riise struck the winning penalty in the shoot-out as Fulham overcame Burton following a 2-2 draw at the Pirelli Stadium.

Ricardo Vaz Te and Ravel Morrison scored to help West Ham United to a 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town.

Southampton continued to impress as they registered an impressive 5-1 victory over Barnsley at Oakwell.

Saido Berahino scored a hat-trick for West Bromwich Albion on debut in the first-half, which helped his team to a comfortable 3-0 home win over Newport County.

Swedish pair of Martin Olsson and Johan Elmander scored on debut for Norwich City in a 6-3 triumph over Bury at Carrow Road.
