The third round of the Capital One Cup fixtures saw no major upsets as all the big boys came away with comfortable victories over their rivals. Let’s take a look at the matches below:
Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently in second position on the EPL table – their best-ever start to a season – comprehensively beat Aston Villa 4-0 at Villa Park, with Jermain Defoe coming away with a brace.
Paulinho and Nacer Chadli were the other goal scorers for Spurs as the London-based club took apart Villa, with the hosts having no answer to the relentless Spurs attack.
Manchester City 5-0 Wigan Athletic
Manchester City continued from where they left off over the weekend as they took apart Wigan Athetic 5-0 at the Etihad. New signing Stevan Jovetic scored his first-ever goal for City as he put two past the Wigan custodian.
In a City side that had made 10 changes to the squad that beat Manchester United, Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas were also on target to end a miserable outing for the visitors Wigan.
Swindon Town 0-2 Chelsea
Meanwhile, Swindon Town played host to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in a game that saw the Blues register a comfortable 2-0 victory. The game saw David Luiz and Juan Mata – who had previously been ignored by Mourinho – take the field in what was his first start for the club this season.
Swindon Town were clearly outclassed by their clearly superior opponents and had very few chances in the game as Fernando Torres scored the opener which was assisted by Mata. Torres later set up Ramires to ensure an easy victory for the Londoners.
Fulham 2-1 Everton
Fulham edged out Everton 2-1 at Craven Cottage to register their first home win in almost six months.
Everton were the dominant side early in the game as they took the lead via Steven Naismith. Despite putting pressure on the Fulham defence, the Merseyside club were unable to get the all-important second goal.
However, Dimitar Berbatov had other plans as he equalised the score for the Cottagers. Darren Bent, who came off the bench, scored the winner for the home team.
West Ham United 3-2 Cardiff City
West Ham United overcame Cardiff City’s challenge as they won the game after a late winner was scored by Ricardo Vaz Te.
West Ham were 2-0 in the 8th minute thanks to goals by Ravel Morrison and Matthew Jarvis. However, Cardiff City made a comeback in the second half as they levelled the score thanks to strikes by Craig Noone and Peter Odemwingie.
But Cardiff’s hopes were dashed as Vaz Te scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute as the Hammers qualified for the next round.
