The Capital One Cup third round draw was made and it has thrown up some feisty fixtures. The biggest clash in this round will be Tottenham Hotspur playing arch-rivals Arsenal. The North London Derby will be played at White Hart Lane. The Gunners did not get past the third round last season, losing 2-1 to Southampton at the Emirates, and they haven’t won the trophy since they last won it in 1993. Tottenham have won it more recently in 2008 under Juande Ramos.
Defending champions Chelsea will also be playing away to League One side Walsall. The Blues won their first trophy in Jose Mourinho’s second stint when they beat Tottenham in the final at Wembley in March this year. The West London side are five-time winners of the trophy, winning it three times in the last decade (2005, 2007 and 2015).
Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United side will play at Old Trafford as they host Mick McCarthy’s Championship side Ipswich Town. The Red Devils have a 25-18 record (with 9 draws) with the Suffolk based side and the Dutch boss will be looking to improve on last season’s highly criticized 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the second round.
Liverpool will also be playing at home as League Two side Carlisle United travel to Anfield. Liverpool will be looking to go one step further than last season when they lost to Chelsea in the semi-finals over two legs, losing 2-1 on aggregate.
Manchester city were also drawn with a Premier League side as they travel to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland. Both teams are at opposite ends of the table with City sitting pretty on top with three wins in three, the only side to do so. Sunderland, on the other hand, are 19th with just one point and are above West Brom only on goals scored with both teams tied on goal difference.
The matches will be played in the week beginning 21 September 2015.
