Carling Cup Review: Crystal Palace dump Wigan out of competition

Wigan Athletic became one of the biggest early round casualties when the Premier League outfit were dumped out of the Carling Cup competition by London club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. A packed capacity crowd cheered the team as they managed to hold off a strong Wigan outfit out in a second round tie last night .

It was an uncanny situation as Wigan had two of the most promising Eagles Academy players in their own team with Ben Watson starting the match and the highly rated Victor Moses starting from the bench. But the Championship outfit were not deterred from their mission as they produced a dominant display to heap misery on Wigan who has had a mixed start to the Premier League this season after narrowly avoiding the drop last season .

It was however the night of a young Wales international Jonathan Williams who struck a wonderful goal to condemn the Latics out of the competition. The 17 year old star in the making playing only his second match for Crystal Palace struck after Ambrose had given the lead in the first half to the Eagles .

The Latics pulled one back through Ben Watson but it was too late for the visitors who were left reeling under the shadows of a dominant display from the home side. They even managed to strike the woodwork twice underlining their dominance.

The third round of fixtures would see the return of the big guns to the competition and with the matches slated for next midweek, we can expect some surprises and upsets .
