Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan Sporting in the dying embers of the game today after Azharuddin Mullick's stoppage time winner, keeping the Mariners in the hunt for their first Calcutta Football League title in eight years.
With today's win, Shankarlal Chakraborty's team have now leapfrogged East Bengal at the top of the table. Bagan, however, have played a game more than their fierce rivals but today's win over Sporting will boost the club's confidence ahead of their last two games of the current season, one of which is against East Bengal in a big Kolkata derby.
Mohammedan, meanwhile, have been left to rue their missed chance and will be back into title contention next season. They are now mathematically out of the title picture with three more games remaining for the club.
Here is the CFL 2017 table after today's result:
Mohun Bagan - 19 points - 7 matches
East Bengal - 18 points - 6 matches
Mohammedan Sporting - 10 points - 6 matches
Peerless - 9 points - 5 matches
Tollygunge Agragami - 7 points - 5 matches
Rainbow - 5 points - 6 matches
Patha Chakra - 4 points - 5 matches

East Bengal take on Mohammedan Sporting in their next game and it be another important clash in the CFL scheme of things. As Bagan bite their nails, it's all in Khalid Jamil and his players' hands to deny their arch-rivals a look-in at the title.
