Tollygunge Agragami are close to creating history in the Calcutta Football League as they could become the first club outside the Big Three (East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting) to win the title since 1958.
They increased their advantage at the top of the table on Friday with an emphatic 5-3 victory over Mohammedan Sporting. Former Dempo striker and I-League winner Koko Sakibo scored four times for Tollygunge.
Tollygunge now have 22 points from nine outings with a healthy goal difference of +18. Friday’s result ended Mohammedan’s hopes of winning the title but mathematically Army XI, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal can still catch Tollygunge.
Of the three, East Bengal have the best chance as they need to win their three games in hand and beat Tollygunge to secure a fifth-straight local league title. That fixture against East Bengal will be Tollygunge’s final match of this season’s CFL Championship round.
Goal difference could also come into the equation as both East Bengal and Tollygunge could finish on the same points.
Mohun Bagan legend Subroto Bhattacharya is the technical director of Tollygunge and the former defender has been able to get the best out of a group that doesn’t have any stars.
