The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 draw took place in Nyon, Switzerland today and defending champions Real Madrid have been drawn with Schalke while the biggest clash is undoubtedly Chelsea taking on Paris Saint-Germain.
Teams from the same group cannot be drawn together and they cannot be drawn with another club from the same country until the quarter-finals. The runners-up from each group will play their first game at home while group winners will have the advantage of playing the second leg at home.
Paris Saint-Germain were the first to be picked and they were drawn with Chelsea – a repeat of last year’s quarter-final. Manchester City were next and they were drawn with Barcelona – a repeat of last year’s Round of 16 fixture.
Bayer Leverkusen were then drawn with last season’s finalists Atletico Madrid. Serie A champions Juventus were next and they were drawn with Bundesliga strugglers Borussia Dortmund. Schalke were the next team to be drawn and they got Real Madrid while Shakthar Donetsk drew Bayern Munich.
Arsenal, who have always drawn a European superpower in the past few seasons, were lucky to draw Monaco this season while FC Basel were left to face FC Porto.
The two Round of 16 fixtures will be played between February and March. The first leg will be played on 17/18 and 24/25 February while the return leg will be played on 10/11 and 17/18 March.
