Chelsea managed to implement their defensive plan very successfully. They started the match with no specialist striker, and Eden Hazard started at the centre as a false 9. For the majority of the match, Chelsea actually played with a 4-6-0 formation as both Pedro Rodriguez and Willian fell back to their own half to defend and mark the City players.

N’Golo Kante started in central midfield again, but whenever Chelsea lost possession, he moved to the right flank to mark the City midfielders, especially David Silva. Jorginho shielded the defence very well, and also had an eye on the talismanic Silva.
The Chelsea fullbacks did not go into overlaps, marking Sane and Riyad Mahrez, City's wingers. Antonio Rudiger also aided Azpilicueta in marking Sane and Luiz, and had an assured presence inside the penalty box. It was an impressive defensive display by The Blues overall.
