What’s the story?
Chelsea are keen on signing players in January and have made a list of possible targets. Antonio Conte has named the players he wants too and the board are now in talks to get the deals done.
According to reports in BILD, Chelsea have made contact with Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal regarding a possible January transfer. The Chile international is now said to be the #1 midfield target for The Blues.
In case you didn’t know…
Conte and Vidal have worked together at Juventus and the midfielder has been linked with a move to Chelsea for some time. Bayern Munich however, were never interested in selling him and the move failed to materialize.
The heart of the matter
Chelsea have Cesc Fabregas, N'Golo Kante, Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko as their midfield options at the club. But Antonio Conte wants more signing to make the team even stronger.
Bayern Munich are close to signing Leon Goretzka on a free transfer from Schalke and that has put Vidal's future at the club in doubts. His current contract at Bayern runs until 2019, but that in no way guarantees him a starting role at the club.
BILD report that Bayern are open to selling him in January while reports in England suggest that Chelsea are the only club interested in him. Express reports that Chelsea are confident of signing him for just £31 million.
Manchester United were linked with Vidal in the past but have shown no interest in him right now. They too need a midfielder as Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Michael Carrick are set to leave the club in the summer.

Author’s Take
Vidal would be a good signing at Chelsea but it is still difficult to see it happen. The Blues do not offer more than a one-year contract to players above the age of 30 – the age is Vidal already is.
