Chelsea back in for two as Roman refuses to give in

As pre-season approaches and as the Euros come to an end, it will signal the beginning of silly season with the press linking players with moves left, right and center until the transfer window closes at the end of August. Be prepared to read that Chelsea are linked with making moves for all sorts of players.

However, it seems that Roman Abramovich has refused to give up on two targets in Victor Moses and Luka Modric.

I have to say I wondered if we had heard the end of the Victor Moses saga after Chelsea’s “cheeky” £4m bid was rejected by Wigan. It’s very unlike Chelsea to miss out on someone like Moses who’s value will appear to be around £6m which could tempt Dave Whelan and Wigan to sell him to us knowing that this is the last year of his contract.

With Florent Malouda looking like he is on his way to Brazil to finish his career there, Moses looks to have been identified as his replacement and at the age of 21, it would be good business having already secured Eden Hazard. Moses impressed towards the end of last season and really came into his own. He played a huge part in Wigan’s revival and impressive run of results. If Roman wants him as much as the press want you to believe, expect the deal to be done asap.

Now Luka Modric is an interesting one again. Of course we have moved on a full season from when he appeared to be our main transfer target. Since then, Juan Mata signed and after being moved inside in Robbie’s 4-2-3-1 formation, was a revelation and won the supporters’ player of the year!

So with Marko Marin and Eden Hazard signed already to play alongside the likes of Juan Mata, where would Luka Modric fit in?

I just wonder if Raul Meireles is key to this deal. Although he seemed to pick himself up after AVB was sacked, it was obvious to see he wasn’t happy. Whenever you saw him as part of the celebrations in Munich and on the open top bus the day after, he stuck to Jose Bosingwa like glue as they are good friends from their Porto days.

With reports that Bosingwa is also leaving Chelsea in a couple of days time, I just wonder if reports of a move for Meireles to Italy have any real substance? I think if a concrete offer came in for him, he would leave and this would pave the way for Modric to replace him.

The problem we have is Daniel Levy. He has surprised all of us by sacking Harry Redknapp and with reports of not paying some of his players a top four bonus because their contract states “Champions League qualification”, we get the impression he is as stubborn as anyone.

He’s just tied Gareth Bale down to a new four year deal and you can imagine he would want Modric tied down to the same.

However, according to some reports, Roman Abramovich had “promised” Modric that he would be back in for him this summer and with Jose Mourinho apparently having second thoughts about a move for the Croatian, Chelsea could come back in with a bid of around £30m.

For both these moves to happen, the players would need to play their part. It’s believed that Moses is keen to move to Chelsea and take his career forward to the next level and Modric has openly admitted before that he would be interested in coming here.

With two stubborn Chairmen in their way, I just wonder if both would hand in transfer requests as early as next week to try and force their way out of their clubs?.

Let’s see what happens in the coming days on these two deals but one thing is for sure, what Roman wants he often gets and I can’t see him being denied the chance twice for both players!
