Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has lifted the lid on the sadness felt by The West Londoners squad following the departure of midfielder Juan Mata.
The Spaniard joined Manchester United in a £37 million deal at the weekend after being frustrated at his lack of opportunities under current Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho.
Having paid his farewells to the Chelsea players last week, 29 year-old Ivanovic has revealed that plenty were sad to see him leave the club.
“It was very sad and emotional for us because he was one of the loveliest guys in the squad,” the Serbian told The Express.
Although many have questioned the decision to allow such a prestigious talent to join a direct rival, Ivanovic was quick to stress that Chelsea had carried out an excellent piece of business, considering Mata had been out of favour recently.
“This was the best thing for all sides. We will see in the future how important it was for us. I think Chelsea did a great deal and let a player who is not playing at the moment leave for another club. Manchester United is important for him as a player,” he declared.
