Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta may well have forced his way into the Blues’ starting line-up this season with a string of impressive performances, but few fans would have been aware that he had such a sublime piece of skill up his sleeve as the one he produced in training for Spain today.
Vicente del Bosque’s squad are preparing to defend the World Cup trophy in Brazil and were taking part in a warm up match when the defender launched a delightful chip over Pepe Reina into the corner of the net.
Executed with the outside of his foot with pin point accuracy, the 24-year-old will have done his chances of earning a place in the starting line-up in the opening game of the tournament no harm at all.
On the right flank, competition is directly between Azpilicueta and Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran. However, having played for the majority of the season on his unnatural left-flank, eclipsing Ashley Cole in the process, Azpilicueta’s versatility could give him the edge over his rivals.
If Juanfran is preferred on the right, Azpilicueta could be given a chance on the left due to Jordi Alba’s injury concerns.
Replicating such a piece of skill would normally be more easily attributed to a forward, but with Spain’s players boasting unbelievable technique it comes as no surprise. They will undoubtedly start the competition as one of the favourites.
Spain have been drawn in Group B and will face the Netherlands, Chile and Australia.
