Jose Mourinho is confident Chelsea will complete the signings of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid respectively, for a combined fee of around £60 million, according to the Daily Express.
Despite Mourinho repeatedly claiming Chelsea were not title contenders, the Blues only finished four points behind eventual winners Manchester City last season and look to be busy in the transfer market this summer as they attempt to improve upon that. The Chelsea manager spent much of last season criticising his attacking options, and will hope the additions of Costa and Fabregas leads to Chelsea’s first Premier League title since 2009/10.
Costa’s £32 million move is virtually complete, with the striker saying, “Am I going to Chelsea? It looks like it,” after Spain’s victory over El Salvador. His arrival may spark Romelu Lukaku’s departure from Stamford Bridge, and it would also raise question marks about the roles of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres.
Cesc Fabregas is free to leave Barcelona in this transfer window, and after Arsenal rejected the opportunity to exercise their first option clause on their former captain, Chelsea seem to be the only club trying to sign him. He would be an excellent replacement for the outgoing Chelsea legend Frank Lampard. Chelsea are believed to be trying to structure the deal in such a way so that Arsenal don’t receive a sell-on fee from Barcelona, which may delay Fabregas’ arrival.
The fees for the two Spanish internationals would be largely offset by the sale of David Luiz to PSG.
