Chelsea's Eden Hazard could be called upon as witness in Eva Carneiro's case

Eva Carneiro left Chelsea after the episode against Swansea

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard is set to be called as one of Eva Carneiro’s star witnesses when her claim against the club for constructive dismissal is heard next year, as per the reports on Daily Mail. Carneiro left her role at Stamford Bridge after Jose Mourinho publicly criticized her for treating Hazard during the match against Swansea City in August.

The Gibraltar-born British doctor was appointed by Blues’ former manager Andres-Villas Boas in 2011 and she retained her position as the club’s head doctor under the managerships of Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho. However, she things got ‘complicated’ with the latter manager at the start of the season.

Carneiro and head physio Jon Fearn treated Hazard during the 2-2 draw with Swansea in August – an incident that led to Mourinho expressing his public fury with his medical staff, who he believed shouldn’t have run onto the pitch.

This led to further controversy and she eventually decided to leave the club, after feeling her position was left ‘undefendable’. The former club doctor is now taking Chelsea to an employment tribunal on grounds of constructive dismissal.

The Belgian international Hazard, who won both the Professional Footballers Association’s and the Football Writers’ Association’s player of the year awards last season, has now been called upon to involve himself in the case and he has been compelled to give evidence at the tribunal stage. A hearing, conducted in public, will take place if no out-of-court settlement can be reached between the two parties.

Carneiro's lawyers failed to agree on a settlement with Chelsea and the three-month period in which a claim must be notified ended on November 8. She is also expected to file a separate but connected claim against Mourinho personally, which would mean that the Chelsea manager would have to appear in person at a tribunal.

Mourinho had been cleared by the Football Association of using discriminatory language towards Carneiro, but the doctor had criticised the governing body over its investigation.

“I was surprised to learn that the FA was allegedly investigating the incident of August 8 via the press,” she said earlier this month.

“I was at no stage requested by the FA to make a statement. I wonder whether this might be the only formal investigation in this country where the evidence of the individuals involved in the incident was not considered relevant. Choosing to ignore some of the evidence will surely influence the outcome of the findings.”
