Ryan Bertrand is the subject of intense speculation this morning and although it could only be rumour, Jose Mourinho is being linked with a loan move for Fabio Coentrao as a potential replacement.
Now this is an interesting situation at the moment because despite what is being said, Ashley Cole has been dropped to the bench and is playing second fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta. It has to be said, Azpilicueta has been outstanding.
It’s my view that a full back should be quick and pacey in order to cover round and track back. Seeing Ivanovic caught out for pace against Basel isn’t the first time it’s happened to our Serbian defender. Don’t get me wrong, he is solid but is a centre back covering the full back role. Azpilicueta should be the number one in that position.
Now this leads us on to the focus of this post, the left back berth in the team. As I said, Cole has found himself playing second fiddle to the Spaniard with Ryan Bertrand left sitting in the stands.
I have no doubt that Bertrand will make it as a top defender but if you are to ask yourselves whether or not you believe he is 100% to walk into the team every week or to provide Cole with real competition, I think you will agree that he isn’t quite yet.
Now this morning, Bertrand is being lined up by Liverpool in January and reports indicate they would be willing to offer £8m. Is that a good enough offer to encourage to sell? Let’s not forget we have Patrick Van Aanholt out on loan at Vitesse as an option next season too!
I would prefer it if we kept hold of Bertrand but again, it’s all down to how the club view his development. Last season was his best without question. His remit was to work hard to start around 20 times or so in the season and he managed that. This season, it’s been a different story so the club could consider a loan rather than a permanent deal.
Now as we all know, Jose Mourinho would be well aware of Fabio Coentrao after his time in Madrid and from what I can remember, it’s not the first time Chelsea have been linked with the player.
It seems that under Ancelotti, he cannot get a look in at the moment and with it being World Cup year, he would want to be playing on a regular basis.
It’s important to point out that this could all be paper talk and pure speculation in response to Liverpool’s interest in Bertrand.
I am interested to hear as many Chelsea opinions on this today from the supporters. How do you feel about Bertrand at the moment and the link to Liverpool? How do you feel about the Ashley Cole situation and of a potential loan move to Fabio Coentrao?
Let me know what you all think asap!
