Chelsea FC is an enigma. No team generates as much transfer news and rumours as Chelsea FC. Is it just players though? Nah, even the managerial post is always up for grabs. With a legacy which before the Abramovic era was concentrated on European glory, to his quick firing win matches attitude, the last few years have been trying times for both the fans and the team.
My article today focuses on one of the most pertinent problems of Chelsea FC – the lack or rather abundance of striking options and summer transfers. Right now, according to reports, Chelsea FC are looking to sign Falcao or at least Cavani. Are the signings really necessary? Statistics would tell you that their strikers have not been scoring an insane amount of goals, so maybe yes. But don’t they already have enough striking options? They have El Nino, Demba Ba (whose signing was a very good move actually), Moses and Lukaku returns from loan after 4-5 games.
Is there really a need of another striker?
Before answering that, let us go back to the players they have signed and destroyed, whether it be Shevchenko or Torres. These were all high value players brought in to bolster the strike force. Did they really do that? Other than 1 odd season, no. The fact that John Terry and Frank Lampard are the highest scoring defender and midfielder respectively is testament enough that goals are scored in bulk, not just by the strikers. The leading scorer after a few matches in the beginning of the present season was Branislav Ivanovic, another defender!
So do they really need to buy a new striker? I think not. They have Lukaku coming back. He needs to be bled into the team. Torres is again finding his rhythm and Ba has shown considerable acumen in finding the net. With Sturridge gone, the selfish striker syndrome seems to have left. Moses though has left a lot to be desired, considering his form at Wigan, but you can expect him to show his true colours next season.
With such a strike force and the transfer rumour of Reus, the squad will be well strengthened. Maybe bring Kakuta back and give him time in the mid and move Mata or Hazard wide with Torres or Ba. With Romeu, Marin and the others including McEachran also staking a claim in the starting eleven, Chelsea should have no problem at all in the midfield.
Defense may be an area of worry but if Chelsea manage to sign Subotic, then that problem also is laid to rest. Luiz, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Cole, Bertrand and Ake along with the others form a solid back four but injuries have been recurring among the senior players and reinforcements are needed.
Chelsea FC have some of the most wonderful players of the game. It is about performing well together and finding the right combination, not just buying players they fancy.
All in all, this transfer season, expect Chelsea to have more transfer rumours related to their manager than the player.
