Frank Lampard could be in line for a surprise return to the Chelsea side to face Manchester United this weekend, report the Daily Star. The England midfielder has been missing through injury since the 2-1 win over Liverpool on December 29th, but has resumed full training and may be in line to play against United.
Lampard suffered a muscle injury, and it was feared that he was to be out for some time. However he resumed training on Monday, just over two weeks after picking up the injury. Scans have shown that initial fears of damage to the midfielder’s hip or thigh proved to be unfounded, meaning that he could play some part at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The veteran midfielder has 18 league appearances this season, 13 of which have come from the start, as he enjoys an Indian summer in the twilight of his career at Stamford Bridge. He has frequently been partnered with Ramires in the centre of the Chelsea midfield and has seen John Obi Mikel and David Luiz deputise for him in his two game absence.
Lampard has taken more shots at goal in the league than any other Chelsea player this season (32).
