Stats: Chelsea's injury record since 2009-10 season

Chelsea
Chelsea’s injury record since 2009-10.

With all this talk of Chelsea having an "Invincible" season, I wanted to have a look at how we have suffered in recent seasons with injuries and when they are likely to occur. Cute Injury have provided some very interesting reading here!

As part of a project to research and analyse all Premier League injuries, Cute Injury have just published a full analysis of all of Chelsea’s reported injuries over the past five seasons – from the 09/10 season through to last season.

We’ve broken down some of the key findings below, but if you’d like to see the full analysis click here:Chelsea injury analysis

Total Chelsea injuries: 126

Over the past five seasons, our players have suffered a total of 126 different injuries – which is just over 25 each season.

Here’s the total injuries to Chelsea players for each season:

Injury

Total time out injured

This 126 different injuries all add up to a total lost playing time of 166 months – which means our players have been out injured for a combined 14 years over the past 5 seasons!

Jose Bosingwa is the unfortunate player who has been out the longest, clocking up a total of 15 months – thanks to a knee injury that kept him out for a whole year back in 2009.

Michael Essien runs him a close second with 13 months out – again thanks to a major knee injury in 2011.

Lots of knee injuries

Knee injuries are actually very common in the Chelsea dressing room – contributing nearly a third of all the injuries suffered by Chelsea players in the past five seasons. Hamstring injuries are the second most common, but are still a long way off the 38 knee injuries – which averages out at more than 7 different knee injuries each season:

When do most Chelsea injuries happen?

Chelsea players seem to be most susceptible to injuries in April and December – with both months accounting for 17 injuries each over the past 5 seasons.

So if recent history is anything to go by then we can expect a few more injuries before the turn of the year. Let's hope we can manage those and that it does not affect us too much!
