Atletico Madrid could be set to lose another of their key players to Chelsea, with the Daily Star having reported that they are to move for left-back Filipe Luis in addition to attacker Diego Costa.
Chelsea’s interest in Luis’ teammate Costa is well documented, with many reports suggesting that his move is all but agreed, but their interest in Luis is a new rumour.
Reports suggest that the fee will be around £16 million, with 28 year old Luis competing with fellow Spain international Cesar Azplicueta for the left-back berth. Azplicueta has switched from right back to left back this season, having adapted with ease and keeping Ashley Cole out of the side.
Out-of-contract Cole now looks set to leave the club, with no offer of a new deal forthcoming, leaving Azpilicueta as the only senior left back at the club. With Cole set to leave Chelsea, a move for Luis, who made 32 La Liga appearances this season for Atletico, would allow Azpilicueta to revert to right back and would fill a gap in Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea squad that had looked like being filled by Southampton’s Luke Shaw.
However, Chelsea are believed to face competition from Manchester United in signing Shaw, prompting their interest in Luis, who would offer a cheaper option.
Atletico, champions of La Liga thanks to a 1-1 draw with Barcelona last week, contest the Champions League final on Saturday against city rivals Madrid.
