Chelsea will keep winning trophies with or without me: John Terry

John Terry was pleased with how the club maintained its dominant run in the league last season

As Chelsea embark on pre-season in Canada, John Terry has been speaking to the press coming off the back of one of his best ever seasons at the club. He talks of last season and his determination to win more trophies this year!

“This club will keep winning trophies with or without me. But I will keep driving the team on the training ground and on the pitch to keep achieving and keep winning trophies,” Terry said.

“I was very pleased individually with the way I played last season. When you get to a certain age people say you're coming to the end and start writing you off.

“But to be able to still perform at the very top is something I'm very proud of. I couldn't do it without the help of great players around me and a great manager. I'm doing the right things off the field as well.

“The manager deserves a lot of credit for the work we do in pre-season. He gets everybody ready and sharp.

“With the signings we made last time we were able to hit the ground running, But players like Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic were on fire too. It probably took everyone back how we started.

“Last year, the first game away to Burnley was when I knew. We were looking good in training, but normally it takes five, six, seven matches to get going. That game we went 1-0 down, but we bounced back, the movement and the passing was superb. After then we just seemed to grow and grown and things got even better.

“Whether we play a top side or a small side, the attention to detail is always there. In team meetings, we are told about individual weaknesses and strengths of our opponents, but in the big games we seem to do a little bit more.

“We find a way to break them down, to find their weaknesses and work on that. There is no stone unturned. It is down to us then as players to deliver.

“I think everyone made a big deal of it because it was such a big result for Tottenham. But there comes a point in every season where you have to pick yourselves up and that's what we did.

“They are a big rival of Chelsea and did play very well against us. Harry Kane was on fire. But the kind of shockwaves it sent probably did us a favour. It made us realise what a good team we are, how well we'd been playing for people to talk about us getting beaten.

“We brushed it off, dusted ourselves down and went again. That's what champions are made of. Winning the Premier League is a very difficult thing to do, which is why you don't see teams win it year after year.

“I'm very proud of what happened as an individual last season, but also the team. We were excellent and to be top all year takes some doing."

Excellent again from Terry and spot on. No team has won back-to-back titles since 2007-2009 when Manchester United did it (Chelsea doing it the two seasons beforehand). It would be incredible to think that we have everything in place to mount a serious challenge to do it again this time around.

As for John Terry? He continues to work hard and to train hard and as your Captain, that's all you can ask for!
