Using Wikipedia, Chelseafc.com, Chelsea Wiki and a few other internet sources we’ve summarised the status and performance of Chelsea players out on loan this season. Some of the commentary is out own, others is a direct pull from other websites, i.e. plaguerised, summarised and added to for a quick snap shot. The statistics are current up till the 30th of December, 2011.
Goalkeeper Metaj Delac
On loan at: SK Dynamo Ceske Budejovice (Czech)Games: 2Comment: Delac was called up by Croatian manager Slaven Bilic for their qualifier away to England in August 2009 whilst still being a 16 year-old. He is not only considered as one of the goalkeepers of the future, but potentially one of the greatest Croatian players since the country gained independence.
Goalkeeper Sam Walker
On loan at: Northampton TownGames: 21Comment: The Cobblers struggled for much of the first half of the season but Sam proved himself one of the most capable stoppers in the league, making 25 appearances before Christmas. However, Johnson was sacked and new manager Aidy Boothroyd opted to sign a veteran goalkeeper in Shane Higgs as his first choice. Sam therefore returned to Chelsea a few days before Christmas.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois
On loan at: Athletico MadridGames: 15Comment: Courtois started the season in impressive fashion and become first choice keeper over Sergio Asenjo, keeping four clean sheets in his first six La Liga games. Courtois received his first red card of this professional career against Real Madrid, after a last man foul on Karim Benzema in a penalty area at the 22 minute mark. He has now made his full international debut for Belgium and the rumours have began as to when he will replace Petr Cech at Chelsea.
Defender Tomáš Kalas
On loan at: VitesseGames: 12Comment: Kalas made his debut for Vitesse on the 17, September 2011 against Roda JC Kerkrade which ended in a 5-0 win for Vitesse. After appearing in pre-season under AVB, the young Czech has been one of the stars of the Vitesse campaign and is a central figure in one of the league’s stingiest defences. A good sign for the future and hopefully can fill the gap left by Alex next season.
Defender Jeffrey Bruma
On loan at: HamburgGames: 12 (2 goals)Comment: Frank Arnesen swooped to purchase Bruma when he joined Hamburg but Chelsea only loaned the young Dutch defender to the German club, as opposed to selling him as they did with Michael Mancienne. Already playing for the Dutch national side (3 games), Bruma’s loan deal is initially for one year although Hamburg have the option of extending his stay in Germany until the end of the 2012/2013 season.
Defender Patrick van Aanholt
On loan at: Wigan AthleticGames: 3Comment: PVA can’t get a game at Wigan. That doesn’t bode well for his future but PVA is expected to return to Chelsea at the end of the season and most likely will be loaned out for one more year to see his development. He was initially picked in the Roberto Martinez’s side but recently he has not featured at all. He signed a new 4 year deal in May 2011.
Midfielder Yossi Beanyoun
On loan at: ArsenalGames: 14 (3 goals)Comment: Yes, we still own Yossi. Many people believe we sold Benayoun to Arsenal and that is untrue, he joined the Gunners on loan on the August 31st transfer deadline day for a one year period. Yossi recently scored the winner in the 87th minute against Aston Villa, and Wenger has used the Israeli in all active competitions to date this season. Although Yossi signed for Ancelotti, his 6 month absence due to injury made it difficult for him to return and claim a starting position. AVB subsequently loaned him out on his arrival to the club, and it’s possible he will be a target of French club PSG at the end of the season due to Ancelotti’s recent French appointment. I would like to see the versatile midfielder back in the Chelsea blue!
Midfielder Connor Clifford
On loan at: Yeovil TownGames: 7 (1 goal)Comment: He has captained Ireland at every youth level, and was an unused sub for a senior team match against Croatia. Captained the Chelsea youth team to its FA Youth Cup success.
Attacking Midfielder Ulises Davilla
On loan at: VitesseGames: 3Comment: Unlike Tomáš Kalas, Davila has struggled to cement a place in the Vitesse starting line-up and has only appeared 3 times, with numerous unused sub appearances. He recently scored three goals in three games for the Vitesse reserves. The first Mexican to sign for Chelsea, and much is expected from this young player who came through the same youth system as Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela.
Winger Gael Kakuta
On loan at: Bolton until 31st Dec, then very likely to Dijon, FranceGames: 4Comment: After nearly breaking every transfer law to sign the young French prodigy, Kakuta has recently struggled at Premier League clubs Fulham and Bolton on loan and looks sent to be sent home to France to play in Ligue 1 with Dijon. It’s becoming make or break for Kakuta over the next 6 – 12 months so here’s hoping he finds his form and returns to Chelsea stronger. Drogba took it upon himself to act as mentor to Kakuta when he joined from Lens, and maybe that’s just what the young starlet needs again.
